About the Horticultural Society of Western Pennsylvania

Founded in 1988 and incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization in 1992, The Horticultural Society of Western Pennsylvania’s (HSWP) purpose is to develop the region’s first comprehensive botanical garden, The Botanic Garden of Western Pennsylvania.

The Botanic Garden of Western Pennsylvania will be unique in its scope and focus on displays of regional flora, horticultural and environmental education, and research into botanical issues of regional importance. The Garden belongs to the people of this region. It will be a resource as well as a place, providing both inspiration as well as practical information to develop new and better ways of working and living on the land. The Garden will be unique among cultural institutions in that it can positively change the way that we live and contribute to the physical transformation of the landscapes of the region.

The Garden will set an example of stewardship by promoting the health and well being of the land and of those who live on it. It will:

  • Provide a place of beauty and serenity for people to reconnect with the green world.
  • Create an atmosphere of excitement, fun and discovery for people of all ages.
  • Demonstrate the interdependence of plants, animals and man and our reliance on the environment.
  • Practice and promote sustainable design and the wise use of resources.
  • Promote gardening as a way to improve mental and physical health and promote gardening techniques that improve the health of the environment.
  • Be a catalyst for improving the landscapes of the region.
